Survivors of domestic violence can have difficulty with many other aspects of their lives due to their experiences with trauma. Art and creativity have the unique capability of rewiring brain patterns to mitigate the effects of trauma and promote healing on a deep level. The healing power of art and creativity is reflected in this year’s theme, Kintsugi, which means ‘golden joinery’ in Japanese. Kintsugi mends broken pottery by rejoining it with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The renewed piece shows its previous fractures as something that should not be hidden and contributes to the overall beauty of the object. Beauty is in the journey of each of us, and Kintsugi personifies it with its unabashed reflection of history and forward movement.
