SUMMARY:Get a Head Start on Friendsgiving with Classic Films The Big Chill\, Thelma and Louise\, Planes\, Trains and Automobiles\, and Babette’s Feast
DESCRIPTION:As the holiday season nears\, in tribute to the time of uniting and reuniting with friends\, The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center presents A Celebration of Friends\, four timeless films that will screen Monday\, Nov. 6\, through Thursday\, Nov. 16\, as part of the Fall Classic Series.\n\nThe Lindsay will screen baby-boomer post-college landmark The Big Chill (cue the '60s tunes)\; the much-analyzed feminist saga of two friends on the run in a convertible\, Thelma and Louise (featuring the 4k restoration)\; the hilarious story of holiday travel gone badly wrong\, Planes\, Trains and Automobiles\, with Steve Martin and John Candy as the weary duo\; and the Oscar-winning film of Isak Dinesen's tale of the immense power of a shared meal\, Babette's Feast.\n\nNominated for three Academy Awards\, including Best Picture\, The Big Chill "represents the best of American mainstream filmmaking\," said the New York Times. Glenn Close\, William Hurt\, Jeff Goldblum and Kevin Kline are among the former University of Michigan housemates taking stock of their lives during an unexpected reunion.\n\nNPR\, looking back at Thelma and Louise\, says: "Two women tore across the American West in a green 1966 Thunderbird convertible and into movie history. The pair entered the cultural lexicon. Women today still roar with laughter when they know they're having a Thelma and Louise moment." As Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis take their final drive\, the ending is sure to spark discussion.\n\nThe late critic Roger Ebert bestowed a rare four stars on Planes\, Trains and Automobiles\, and for him it was more than a comedy. "This is the only movie our family watches as a custom\, most every Thanksgiving\," he said. "It not only contained a universal theme\, but also matched it with the right actors and story\, so that it shrugged off the other movies of its kind and stood above them in a kind of perfection."\n\nIn Babette's Feast\, winner of the 1988 Academy Award for Best International Film\, a mysterious Frenchwoman named Babette walks into the lives of two 19th-century Danish sisters living austere lives in honor of their stern pastor father. "Impeccably mounted and played\, this is gastro-cinema at its most sensual and intoxicating\," says Empire.\n\nPlan a friend date at the Theater! Tickets are on sale now\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center\, formerly The Tull Family Theater\, is an independent\, film-driven arts nonprofit with two screening rooms and flexible event/performance space located at 418 Walnut St.\, Sewickley. Parking is available in the adjacent municipal lot and on the street.
